Question Break the Code: RDM? BIS?

Sorry for this sophomoric question: But a number of threads mention RDM as a form of mileage credit accumulation. What is RDM?

And while you're rolling your eyes: our leader UA1Flier was mentioned to forever receive 100% BIS - which I take it to mean Butt In Seat. (Other than his Butt has been in every UA seat forever, what is the distinction here that I am missing?

Thanks.

RDM: Redeemable mile/award mile
BIS: Butt in seat mile - the actual distance flown excluding class of service bonuses

What about kayakers -- what's the derivation of this term? I "get" Kettles.

Or, since these terms are not specific to United, the FT Glossary:

Moving this thread to the TravelBuzz! Forum.
