Passengr usage fee

I recently booked a flight to Jamacia on Spirit and all the different amounts listed under taxes and fees was pretty straight forward except the $75.96 passenger usage fee. I researched this and found that spirit was charging this under taxes and fees instead of including it in the actual price of the ticket which got them in trouble with the D.O.T. I called customer service and they said it was govt fee but I don't think so can anyone tell me what this fee is?

Some airlines such as Air Canada charges extra fees because its unregulated.. This is a common practice..

I would recommend that you shop for the best overall price and forget about the tax and fees details..

btw.. Welcome to FlyerTalk..

The Passenger Usage Fee is the fee levied for passengers to occupy the interior of the aircraft.

They will continue to do this until the new regulations take effect and require the total price to be shown.

It really doesn't matter, I don't care if my ticket is $1 and the taxes and fees $299 or the ticket is $299 and the taxes and fees $1, either way I'm paying $300 to board the plane.

Twice I have flown FLL to BOG and twice they have taken my luggage to BOG but left me in FLL

This thread has got me thinking that I must have paid the baggage fees but not the passenger usage fee.

Passenger Usage Fee

Spirit Airlines is an "a la carte" airline. They have unbundled every product and service imaginable when you fly. The Passenger Usage Fee is a fee for booking your reservation online or via the reservation center. You can avoid the fee by purchasing your ticket at the airport ticket counter. (I know; I've done it several times.) Currently, between LAS and LAX, they have hiked the PUF from $8.99 to $16.99 one way. If they aren't careful, they will outprice themselves!

Welcome to FT!

Thanks for weighing in.. Spirit being aggressive on the pricing breakdown, I agree won't be doing themselves any favors for future business and customer loyalty..

NZ has a similar fee of $25 to pay by credit card. I grudgingly paid it, since I wanted the trip interruption protection on my CC.
