When to book?

I was hoping to get some help. I am completely new to this, and have been looking at forums for a bit for help.

I will be traveling with my brother for a Europe trip, crossing Spain to Germany. We plan on heading out at the end of May 2012 for a few weeks. I am hoping to use miles, have MR, United, and looking at the US Airway miles purchase.

When would be the best time to purchase tickets to fly in May for hopefully cheaper costs? Or is it always best to buy them ASAP? I was hoping to wait till around December so I can situate vacation for work purposes. Also, which would be the cheapest country to fly in to? Seemed like LHR was always a bit cheaper.

Thank you for any help.

Earlier is always better. If you can get the award seats you want, book them.

I will say that award seat availability can fluctuate. Sometimes more seats will be made fpr a flight that did not have any available when you were looking. This happens occasionally but I would not bank on it happening for you.

If you know your travel dates start your search now.
