I completely agree! If you're taking the wooden hangers out of the closet, you are stealing hangers. In fact, if you're taking anything other than what the hotel expects to provide new to each guest, you are stealing!
I think the list of what's OK to take is pretty short: shampoo, toiletries, stationery, slippers that were clearly disposable, and anything you've paid for as a line-item on your bill.

I wanted to borrow a hanger from a hotel recently (so I could hang my coat in the rental car) but the hangers had fixed rings around the rod so they couldn't be removed. The rings had a notch on the bottom so the wooden base of the hanger could be removed and reattached.
I do keep the shampoo or lotion mini bottles if I like them for my 3-1-1 bag.

I often take the Do Not Disturb sign seems the kids love it..they put them on their door

I take the little mouthwash bottles and sometimes the plastic laundry bag(s) to pack dirty laundry or wrap shoes in. That's it. I think it's really wrong to strip the room of fixtures, whether it's the bathrobe, wooden hangers, or the clock radio.

I think dispensables fine.. slippers if you ask for permission.. they often throw them out anyways..

Once I asked the front desk at the Sheraton Baltimore North to borrow a hanger for a day so my suit jacket wouldn't get wrinkled in the car. They handed me two and said, "you can keep 'em. Enjoy."

There was a recent article in the San Diego paper about the fact that some hotels are beginning to do away with the little bottles and soaps and going to dispensers mounted in the shower as a way to lower costs. It mentioned a few other amenities like coffee, irons, sewing kits and shoe shine kits going the way of the Dodo as a method of cutting back costs.
