Air Plus Airlines to start nonstop service from Rockford, IL to Zagreb, Croatia

AirPlus Airlines has announced it will offer the once-weekly flights nonstop from Rockford, Illinois to Zagreb, Croatia, with continuing service on to Belgrade, Serbia.

No, this is not a belated April Fools joke.

Rockford, IL has a customs and immigration facility, and nearby Chicago has a high Croatian and Serbian population.

The flights will be offered for 13 weeks and the press release on Rockford Airport's website claims that already approximately 2,000 seats of the 3,000 total seats have been sold.

I'd probably be considering one of these flights if I had not already gotten my US-Europe tickets in order.

Between the RFD subsidy -- if that is still in play for this -- and the growing demand for VFR and other leisure traffic to/from Croatia, the flights working out for the season and filling up doesn't surprise me. The FYR population in the area around ORD and up to MKE is sufficiently large to fill up a good proportion of the seats on these very limited number of flights during peak season.

I LOVE reading this... We cancelled a trip to Croatia earlier this year since the logistics of getting from TPA to Dubrovnik became a nightmare and the price became quite high.

Even from within Europe, one-connection flights to Croatia -- DBV in particular -- on regular carriers that are part of the big three airline alliances can be very expensive. Ironically perhaps, the situation in terms of price is worse before the true summer peak period hits because whatever "LCC" competition services the likes of DBV doesn't get going until the true summer peak is in full swing.

One of the cheapest options to get to DBV usually ends up being via Spain, BCN generally at that.

There's some folks of Basque descent in Minden and Gardnerville, Nevada. Maybe the planes could now be used to fly nonstops from Minden to Bilbao.

Didn't ATA once fly JFK-Belfast-Riga, Latvia using a 757?
