Can i bring sand on a plane?

Hello

Can i bring beach/desert sand on a plane from SFO to FRA?
Soil is not allowed, right? Because there are living organisms in.

It's not that we don't have any sand in my country I just collect sand from world beaches/deserts.

no

It is viewed as an agricultural risk, among other things.

How much sand are we talking about?? 10 kilos? Then probably not.

I really dont see an issue bringing a very small amount.... 99.9% no one is going to care, 0.1% they will confiscate it, but only if for some reason your bag is searched on arrival in Europe....

My mom collects sand/shells as well and always asks me to bring some when I travel internationally. I use small plastic tubes from The Container Store but you can also find similar products in the travel toiletries section at Target/Walmart for $.99. I've never received a complaint from a TSA agent or customs official.

Australia searches your bags carefully. I had a package of peanuts from the plane and they took it. They weren't nasty but they said "you said you didn't have any food. this is food.", gave me a dirty look, and took it away.

From what I can tell

when picking up something off the floor of almost any class of cabin, there's LOTS of sand that has been brought onto various planes.
But I do notice a prevalence leaving Maui.....

We took my father-in-law's ashes from US to Egypt. We were on AF, then Egypt Air. We had no problems.

Just package it nicely, as if it were bought at a store as a souvenir.

Last summer i flew from SFO-RIX and had some sand from Baker Beach in my bag as a gift for a family member over there. The TSA found it at Security, asked what the hell it was, and then proceeded to take a small part of it out and test it for explosives. After it came back negative, they waived me through no problem.

When they found it in MAN, the security guy was more interested in why i would bring sand as a gift than if it was dangerous or not. As long as you calmly explain what it is it shouldnt be a problem.

So if TSA will want to check it it's better to have it in carry-on than checked luggage?
