Baggage delay compensation

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, and I had a question about baggage delays:

On a flight with KLM and Copa Air from London to Costa Rica, my baggage was delayed by 1 day on arrival. Because I was leaving for a week long boat trip the following day, I had no choice to buy some replacement clothing (basic things, like shorts and T-shirts, cost about 150) and recover my baggage after the boat trip.

When I got back from the holiday, I filed a claim with KLM (which they then forwarded to Copa Air) but they have rejected to pay any compensation.

Am I entitled for a compensation?
How can I take my claim further, or file a complaint to a regulatory body (i.e. to somewhere other than KLM or Copa Air)?

Thanks.
