Data on Airport page?
Hi,
I'm currently working on a page that is dedicated to collecting information about airports around the world.
And I was wondering what kind of data YOU would like to see on such a page? There are no constraints, everything goes!

Welcome to FT!
You might want to search for a series of recent posts by mcblack1, who seems to be working on a similar project. (Most of them, if memory serves, are in the geographic forums, but a search for posts by that username will turn them all up.) You might be able to cooperate or at least share information. If nothing else, some of the sources that have been posted in reply to his/her requests may be useful.

and many thanks for the warm welcome!
Hmm, thats not easy to solve. I'm from germany, and here, the Wifi is ususally not provided by the airport itself, but by the individual airlines, who equip their lounges with that. I'll try and come up with an idea about how to best map this. Thanks for your thoughts and again thanks for the warm welcome!

and thanks for your ideas! Quite frankly, I havent thought about any of these so far (except for the last one), and quality measures like "quiet areas" will be certainly very difficult to solve. But I'll try and match all of this criteria! Again many thanks for your input!

and many thanks for the warm welcome! I checked the postings from mcblack1 - it seems like our aims are indeed comparable in certain ways, and I'll contact him(/her?). However, my aim would be rather to have the "Community", thus the users, contribute the data to my page - so mcblack1 could be a primary user of my page

Thanks again for bringing this up, and also for the warm welcome!

So there are a lot of factors to take into account, LHR offering the best connectivity but LCY being small, comfortable and close to the city, with minimal/no queues. The seats are nice and a few shops but not too much due to size - doesn't matter, you only need get there 30-40 minutes pre flight.
LGW is a great base for some LCC and has a nice selection of shops inside, but can be like LHR in terms of population overload at times. Nonetheless, I'm always able to find a seat in both LGW and LHR. Since both have long queues and travel to them can be problematic, I usually arrive early, and find a power port to juice from. LHR is far better at that than LGW. This allows me to watch a show or surf the net for an hour before boarding.
And there are some airports to avoid like the plague if transiting without lounge access - like DXB where seats are always scare in supply, people often sleep on the floor due to crazy connection times, and some shops that don't accept credit cards (I'm looking at you, Dunk'n Doughnuts!).

They are hard ones - which by the same token makes them very useful. To given you some insight, I find all this very useful for decisions on what airport to fly out of in London (yes, a very specific example with a lot more commercial airports than other places). I've got a choice of LHR, LGW, LCY, STN and LTN.

thanks for taking a moment to illustrate your thoughts. The major problem with quality measures is not only that they're difficult to map out objectively, but they're also pretty hard to gather together. I myself am not in the fortunate situation to travel a lot, so I'd need to rely on the user community to contribute - which is nice, but requires a large audience, which I do not have.
However, nothing is impossible, so I'll try and come up with some ideas about how to solve this.
Marco
PS: I actually like the T5 satellite at LHR.

- "Short Cut" options (for example, at DEN it's often faster to take the skybridge to Concourse A and go through security there, than it is to go through security before the trains to the councourses).
- Airside smoking options: Lots of threads about this on FT
- Duty free locations & rankings, particularly at domestic US airports. If I want to grab a bottle before I board my flight to Canada, how far is the duty free shop (kiosk?), how good is the selection, and how prompt are they at delivering to the gate before my flight starts to board?
- Connection options: How they work? For example, take a look at this:

As you can see, most of the suggestions involve information that can not usually be found on the airport's official website. But given that, a link to the airport website or other websites with information about specific airports would be helpful.
In order to keep your site manageable, in general I would recommend links to sites where information can be found rather than re-listing everything about every airport. For example, ground transportation, airport maps, airlines serving given airports and similar information can easily be found elsewhere. It's the more obscure but equally important information posters have listed above where your site could be extremely helpful.

Hi,
wow, manymanymany new options, thanks you guys! I wasn't expecting so much support.
The more I read all the great suggestions here, the more it seems to me that I only just started on the long road to building a "good" page, one that is also of use for travellers, not just for aviation fans like me.
gglave, thanks for your input. Beeing a smoker myself, I know some about the problem to find a place..
bitburgr, thanks to you as well! By the way, your username doesnt by coincidence relate to my former hometown Bitburg?
JerryFF, thanks for cautioning me to try and list the world. I'm trying to take a middle road: On the one hand I'd really like to try and have some stuff on my page as well, ideally based on user contributions. But on the other hand I also want to link out into the web.
In case anybody wants to check - here is what I got so far: http://airports.palzkill.de. Mind that this is only the "Alpha"-stage, and so far really just basic information. Especially for travellers, it's probably not worth anything yet. All the stuff around user contributions and mapping out details is yet to come.
