You could fly to Japan for that price. I've never paid more than $300 cross country and even that is a rip. Use various online services. The USAir low fare finder has a few $350 days.
I just went thru this with my parents. They paid $900 to fly PHL-DFW. I was like "are you nuts!". They responded "but that's what they told us when we called the airline".
