Airline Route Mapper tool (windows based)

Hello,

I am releasing Airline Route Mapper, a new tool that allows you to view and explore route maps of over 600 airlines.

I wrote this tool as a hobby project for my personal enjoyment and am making it freely available to fellow FlyerTalkers. Suggestions or bug reports are welcome.

Very Cool! I will find this very handy. How often does the route information get updated? Is that done over as a separate data download or is it embedded into the app so it has to be re-installed?

cockpitvisit Nov 21, 2007 12:48 pm

The route information is currently embedded into the app. As to how often it will get updated, time will tell ;), but I plan to keep the app current.

One issue that has been reported is that SA, LX and HP are missing from the list of Star Alliance airlines in the app. So to get a Star Alliance route map including SA, you should select Custom... and enter the following airline codes:

AC BD JK LH LO NH NZ OS OZ SK SQ TG TP UA US SA LX HP

What a terrific tool. Thanks for hooking this up!!!

That's some really nice German engineering ;)

I'm not trying to start a religious war, but it appears from the download that this tool is for Windows systems only. Can you confirm, or explain how to use it with Linux, Mac OS or any other UNIX-based system?

TIA!

LarryJ Nov 22, 2007 11:04 am

How do you zoom in/out if you don't have a wheel on your mouse? i.e. you're on a notebook?

The tool is for Windows systems only, sorry for not making it clear. If you have a Windows emulator, you may be able to run it, although the graphics would be noticeably slower (it uses OpenGL for graphics). I just tried it in VMWare, it worked surprisingly well.

This is a hobby project, and I can only afford doing it because I can reuse lots of code from my commercial projects, which are Windows-only. So don't expect native versions for non-Windows systems.

To zoom on a notebook, you can use + and - keys on the keyboard. You can also scroll with arrow keys.

Awesome! Thank you!

Oh Crap. I have a Mac! Thanks anyway!

Wow, neat tool. You should consider marketing your tool for more aviation enthusiasts to use. I'm sure many people would be interested. ^

lewinr Nov 23, 2007 5:15 am

this is a great tool! I've wanted something like this for years. If you want to build a web version, I can donate a host for the site...

AirP Nov 23, 2007 11:23 am

Handy tool - thanks. I like that it is offline so I don't have to be "connected" to use it.

Gnopps Nov 23, 2007 4:57 pm

Really cool! Great work!

Cheetah_SA Nov 24, 2007 2:49 am

Neat tool! ^ In case you're planning an update... the list of OW carriers is also deficient - missing RJ.

cockpitvisit Nov 24, 2007 3:12 am

Thanks for the kind words!

I know this, but I don't have a route map for RJ (yet). Some RJ routes from AMM will show up if you enable codeshares. There are also a few other important route maps missing, notably CI.

A web version may appear at some point in the future, but my priority right now is to get data on more airlines, improve the data accuracy, add a simple planner and maybe also a simple availability checker for RTW planning.

First off it, it's great in most ways. Thanks!

One specific problem, though: I can't seem to find a way to display American Eagle and American Connection flights (the regional jet arms of AA). I'm don't think they have separate airline code, they're just 3xxx (and maybe also 4xxx?) flight numbers on AA. From LAX, there are a number of Eagle-only AA destinations, such as FAT (Frencso CA) that you don't show. (You show FAT but not with a direct flight to LAX, on AA or otherwise.)

Are you cutting off flight numbers above a certain threshold (to weed out codeshares), and could that number be too low (blocking out regional subsidiaries too)?

Btw, UA also flies nonstop LAX-FAT using a regional subsidiary (in that case again using regular UA flight numbers but this time in the 5xxx range), but again you don't show that.

It's obvious you can't use one flight number cutoff for all airlines, as UA is using 5xxx for its own RJ flights, but AS uses 4xxx for codeshares!

Hey thanks, I like it!

You should see these flights if you enable codeshares on the toolbar.
Currently, there is no way to distinguish between codeshares with other airlines and regional operations of the same airline though. I hope to have that at some point in the future. The problem is, regionals appear as "codeshares" in most timetable data, but there is no information who operates the codeshare.

Mac Emulation

For folks with recent Macs (with Intel processors) - you no longer need to emulate a PC, Macs now use the same processors as wintel machines.

If you only need to run one or two Wintel programs, first try Crossover Mac from Codeweavers. It manages to let you run many Wintel programs without having to buy Windows itself.

If you want to actually run Windows, you can install it with Apple's BootCamp, included in OS X 10.5 (Leopard). That let's you reboot your Mac into Windows. The only cost is a copy of Windows (OEM versions are under $200). We actually have one client who found that an 8-core Mac Pro was the fastest Windows machine they could buy at the price, they use to for a rendering engine.

If you want to run Windows in another window while using your Mac (without rebooting) Parallels and VMWare Fusion both allow that, and each costs about $80. Parallels is more mature, Fusion seems slightly faster (but both are quite fast). Again, you also have to buy Windows itself.

If you are not sure if your Mac has an Intel processor or not, under the Apple menu select "About this Mac" and the processor info will be shown. If it includes the word "Intel" then all the above applies. If it says PowerPC, it may be time for an upgraded Mac!

wow and i thought i wasted a whole day, trying to figure out codes and arguments on the biz / first class deal thread.
Now i have found something very usefull. Thanks!!!!

Thanks cockpitvisit, nice app.

It may be just me, but I find the color scheme makes the pop up boxes hard to read. White or light yellow/tan text on an only slightly darker background is very difficult to make out for my eyes.

Maybe a dark blue or otherwise dark font would be helpful?

Thanks

gitsumjunkmail Nov 30, 2007 11:01 pm

Dude. That's cool as heck. Nice work!

The text in pop up boxes should be black, as shown on this screenshot.

Do pop up boxes look different on your PC? Or are you talking about something else?

How does it differ from this aviation specific program which has been out for years...........?

The purpose of my tool is not to plot arbitrary routes like the GC mapper does, but to show you airline route maps (routes actually flown by various airlines).

Carioca Canuck Dec 2, 2007 12:18 pm

Friday I am flying as follows on United...........YYC-DEN-IAD-GIG.

YYC-DEN is 898 miles on the GC mapper and 899 on yours.
DEN-IAD is 1452 miles on the GC mapper and 1450 on yours.
IAD-GIG is 4791 miles on the GC mapper and 4811 on yours.

A difference of 22 miles on a trip of 7141 miles.....a difference of 00.33 %. The UAL website shows the same numbers as the GC mapper.......so I don't think it's arbitrary at all.

I don't see the point.....or what is different. Sorry.

I'm completely baffled by whatever your point is. Sorry.

Got it, thanks! Very strange, must be an OpenGL issue. Does anyone else have this problem?

Are all text labels for airports readable? The DEN label seems to be missing a shadow, not sure if it is a JPEG artifact or a real problem.

If you use the View|Find menu command to find an airport, then click OK, does the "find result" label show a black text, or is it unreadable as well?

JPEG artifact, the city labels look normal here. All text boxes for all the various features have the same color scheme I showed.

Thanks for looking in to it.

This mapper isn't meant to calculate mileage...it shows actual scheduled routes offered by airlines. The Great Circle Mapper gives you a map and mileage based upon city pairs you enter.

Sweet tool, thanks! I noticed that Air Greenland (http://www.airgreenland.com, airline code GL) is conspicuously absent, though. It would be awesome if you add GL in one of your future updates!
