recommended wireless printer/scanner for technophobes?

My parents want to get a printer/scanner thingie that will work on the wireless network (preferably with no additional hardware required, like a wireless printing hub). They aren't big fans of HP and don't need color. Any suggestions on a decent unit? Thanks!

I have setup a Brother MFC-7840W for a client's home office. No issues in about 1 year. She mostly uses it to print, copy and send/receive faxes. No color scanning, which is Brother's weakness from what I have heard.

I have this model at home, it is a fast black-only laser printer, and it DOES scan in color. Mine is connected by ethernet cable to a Linksys wifi router, but IIRC that cable is not necessary.

I'm using an HP6450 All-in-One OfficeJet with all of our computers at home connected to it wirelessly. Scans and prints in color and black-and-white. Set-up was a snap and it works flawlessly.

same here, the W is wireless. It has wifi built-in and does scan in color. Mine is connected to a switch, but it doesn't need the wired connection.

It's a nice printer. Really an MFC, but it doesn't need to be tethered to a computer. except perhaps for scanning, you can designate which computer the scan is sent to.

HP 6480

I bought one of these a few months ago directly from HP. It was about $100, a great price. I love it.
Printing is fast and sharp. It also does both sides which is a great feature.
No problems with faxing or scanning. Print cartridge change is a snap.
The operation and set up is intuitive. Anyone should be able to do it. It pays to download the latest drivers from HP however.
Good luck!

I, too, love the HP 6480. It was easy to setup wirelessly. Also, you don't have to install all the mumbo-jumbo bloated drivers to get multifunction scanning, etc... You can use a web browser to access the device's web interface and pull down a scan from the "webscan" function. We are a mixed Mac/Windows household, too, and it works great on both sides. We also use it as our dedicated fax machine.

Costco might have a non-HP that would do the trick, and you'd have 90 days to return it if it doesn't work out.

I have used the Canon MX860 since June and it rocks. Great printing, scanning and copying (its nice to have a copier in the house). NB I have not used the fax feature and some reviewers have critiqued this function. All in all, IMO, a great box. Consider the Amazon Super Saver free shipping option for about $175 delivered. You dont want to have to pay the shipping - its not light.
