I still don't understand why Outlook wouldn't reply to the address specified in the "Reply To" header?

Isn't that why that header/instruction exists?

Thanks for the clarification that this is a gmail-generated problem

Yes, but how many Outlook users would realize that the address that follows the [From:] label in the Outlook UI is not actually the From: address (and should not be copied-and-pasted/added to the address book/etc.)?

It is not really a GMail-generated problem -- there are, in fact, a number of good reasons for including the Sender: header.

There are, however, no reasons for misrepresenting Sender: as From:

My Sprint cellular modem does the exact same thing. If one of my email recipients forwards my email to someone, the person receiving that email will see <[email protected] on behalf of N965VJ [[email protected]] >.

When I first got an Aircard I didnt realize that email replies from a person that received the forwarded email went down a black hole. Level 2 tech support at Sprint could not figure out why that on behalf of stuff was going on or how to stop it. I gave in and created a POP 3 account in Outlook to handle this.

gmail now has a way to Send mail from another address without "on behalf of".
Instead of using Gmail's servers to send the message, we'll use the servers where your other email address lives. Since Gmail isn't the originating domain, we don't have to include "Sender" info in the header. No more "on behalf of."

In some casual testing by me it works with earthlink but not godaddy or namezero. It gets a message:

Your other email provider is responding too slowly. Please try again later, or contact the administrator of your other domain for further information.

I have had trouble with some SMTP servers that do not let you send mail unless you have recently logged in and checked your inbox. I guess this is in order to prevent spam flowing freely out.
