Pre-order W7

Looks like M$ REALLY wants us to upgrade

Windows 7 is coming on October 22, 2009. Here's an easy way to get it fast and save a bundle: Pre-order a Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade for $49** or a Windows 7 Professional Upgrade for $99.** That's about half off the estimated retail prices. This offer is available through participating retailers. Pick one below and pre-order today. They'll tell you how to get your copy when Windows 7 is available.

more here

Good price points, not sure if there will be ways to get it for any less(legit) in the future.

Been playing with RC1 and am pretty happy with it over BOB V2. Still not sure if I just won't stay with XP. But at this price might, hmmmmmmm

I went ahead and placed pre-orders for my two home machines. I went through Amazon, so if there's a price drop, I'm covered. $50/machine is pretty cheap.

I've been running W7 beta/RC as a dual-boot on my work laptop (to provide some segregation between work/personal on the road in lieu of carrying a netbook). I've had no issues with it, and the performance has been good.

I was goig to ask this question. Is it really worthwhile upgrading to W7? I'm pretty happy with Vista and wonder if there are any advantages?

It is everything Vista should have been

It runs smoother, it is more stable and it looks prettier. Most certainly worth $50 IMHO.

I ordered a copy today from Amazon for my home Vista machine.

I was also out on Dell's site yesterday, all ready to order a new PC for my daughter, when I saw this announcement. We had postponed the purchase from earlier in the week so she could pick out the color .

Good for me - the announcement also includes a free upgrade to Windows 7, once it comes out, for PC's purchased from today forward. We'll do the color picking and ordering later tonight, having saved another $50. I bet there are quite a few canceled orders and re-orders from the big manufacturers over the next 24-48 hours.

I ordered two copies for my laptops that are running vista. I don't know that I will install them immediately, I will probably wait to see what other people experience. I know I will eventually, so it was worth it to place the order now with the promotional pricing.

With windows7, will all the files under \Users\myname actually be owned by me? hahaha. They aren't now. And if you turned off UAC, it's probably a disaster to try turning it back on. I tried it once, and several programs I installed when it was off didn't work when I tried turning it on.

I have file sharing turned off in the network center. Yet, when I delete directories under \Users\myname\Pictures, I suffer through this dialogue of windows telling me that the directory and the files are shared, and do I really want to do that? ...? Does w7 fix that too? hahaha. It seems to take a long time just to delete those files also, because windows thinks it has to remove the shares one file at a time? I have no idea. Why it doesn't just quickly remove the files and directories, I have no idea. It's just one of those stupid things. It would be easier and faster to just open a cygwin shell and do a rm from there, I imagine, but why should I have to do that?

For me the jury is out if W7 will be what vista should have been. We'll see. From what I've read, people seem to like it, but that could be because any improvement on some of the flaws in vista is a good thing.

Hmm I might have to take advantage. I'm on xp sp3. Went to vista and hated it with a passion

Looks like the inexpensive pre-order deal is gone now! I missed out... you snooze, you lose.

I waited on purpose - I'll either get it through Technet, or I'll see whether the rumors of a family pack are true. Either way, all machines in my home are going to 7 when it is out.

I did the pre-order for my work laptop and am confused. Wasn't there like 165 different versions of Vista? But only two versions of W7? So does that mean all the crap I paid extra for in Vista Super Duper will go away in W7 or just be free to everyone in W7?

There are 6 editions of BOTH Windows Vista and Windows 7: Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Business(Vista)/Professional(7), Enterprise, and Ultimate.

There are additional editions of both Vista and W7 for the EU to meet EU-specific regulations.

There were 4 versions of Vista:

Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate.

Windows 7 has 3 versions, Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate.

Just to be clear, there are more editions of each as I mentioned, but some are only available through certain distribution channels. (volume, OEM, etc)

I only mention that because someone may be reading this post on a Vista Enterprise machine and confused as to why you're saying that that edition doesn't exist
