High Security Blackberry-Like Device

The New York Times has an interesting piece about a smartphone with an unusual product description:

“Developed for the National Security Agency’s Secure Mobile Environment Portable Electronic Device (SME PED) program, the Sectéra Edge is certified to protect wireless voice communications classified Top Secret and below as well as access e-mail and websites classified Secret and below.”
You can get yours for only $3,350.

Anyone on FT already using it?

As a Treo user since the 300, I find it amusing that the "Barackberry" that everyone is so fond of referring to is actually a modified Treo and has nothing to do with RIM.

I've always thought that that debate was sort of silly, given the fact that senior staffers and other officials were unquestionably going to be using BBs, etc.

My bigger concern would be dropping it! That's an expensive accident.

Me, I'll stick with my primitive Motorola non-camera, non-keyboard flip phone (quad band, though--that's what I care about!).

I wonder if Blackberry is going to become a term like Kleenex and Xerox.

It's meant to sustain a drop from typical holding/holder height onto concrete.

It seems to have gotten there in part already.

I have seen clear photos of him using a Blackberry, never a Treo.

I've heard it's a Verizon 8830, but who knows.

He's switched carriers a couple of times. The later shots (closer to the elections) he had an older 8700 series. Most likely GSM and I think ATT (although could be T-mobile).
