Charging iPhone with firewire

Does anyone know if one can charge 1st gen iPhone with same FW charger used for the older iPods? I have very old iPod and use FW connected to my in office iMac. I would like to keep iPhone charger at home.

Did a search on the apple.com discussion boards but no answer? Thanks

This thread may be of some use, though I think you have one permutation that isn't discussed in there.
