Google says that this is the device.

Does anyone else find the ad a little creepy? The kid wanders off and comes back with a red balloon from somewhere, like as a gift from the strange "friend" he met up with. Ick.

How do you know the kid didn't have the baloon when he walked away?

I don't, just a vivid imagination. Since the kid isn't visible in the commercial until the very end there is no way to know anything about him.

I also think that the idea of needing a locator device for a kid is a bit strange, but I'll probably have to move this thread to OMNI if I'm not careful.

If you want to put a "travel" spin on it I guess you could use it to locate your car in the parking garage.

Here is one made just for your dog:

I'm not sure about the brickhouse one. Their site seems weird, and there are almost no real reviews of the product to be found anywhere.

I had 2 kids and never lost either of them. Maybe that's because I kept my eye on them and didn't get pre occupied on a cell phone or such like so many parents I see nowadays. I had to help a lost child at the park a few weeks ago, he wandered way off and when we found mom she was playing away on her Blackberry and had no idea he was gone. He had been gone at least 10-15 mins.

We live in strange times, sad to say.

Why the laugh? In New Jersey, there is a shopping center called the Newport Center Mall. There are two identical parking garages neither of which is marked with a given name (e.g. "north"). And you don't get a ticket when you park.

Try finding your car there.

These have been around for many many years, packaged to just about every market.

If in a pretty plastic bear shaped colored case, they are child separation alarms. If they are in a much more professional black case, they are a laptop separation alarm. They all work the same way, when something is whatever the range of the device is, both start beeping so you know it's missing and you can follow the sound to find it.

All over the internet for $20 or so, if all you want to know if something moves too far from you. If you want GPS and the rest to track it, of course it will cost a bit more.

Looking at their website, I found this product:

Some people and their illogical fears make me laugh.

In '96 I was at universal Studios in Orlando. As we were leaving the park there were two people walking through the garage with their keys out pushing the panic button on the remote door lock thing, desperately trying to find their car. That was entertaining and didn't require convincing parents that they needed to buy a special device to track their kids within 600 feet (which really isn't that far) or that they needed bullet-proof backpacks.

I have been using this device for a while to find misplaced car keys and to protect property after a back pack getting stolen a while back.

I think it is made by a UK company and is marketed over here as Loc8tor.

It works quite well but is a bit silly to use in public with your star trek communicator device and the high pitch wail that varies depending on if you are pointing towards the tag you are trying to locate.

The alert mode is handy though. It sets off an alarm if a tag you are monitoring is taken out of a certain range. I wouldn't suggest this is used for tracking kids though because by the time the alert mode goes off you have to be fast to track and move towards the child before they go out of range. Just keep an eye on your kids!

Here is a Youtube demonstration of the device.
