I use Tomato - it has OpenSSH built in and is easy to set up. I like it better if you don't need full VPN and just want one or two ports tunnelled.

Depends what you're worried about.

FOr general browsing, do you really care if people see what sites you're going to? The probability of anyone even looking is fairly low, though.

If you're accessing bank accounts and the like, it'll already be encrypted so you have very little to worry about.

Not planning on paying any bills from the road...Probably the most secure transaction will be logging into aa.com. I did that just now and it doesn't appear to be secure (no https, no padlock icon). I don't store cc #s but there is personal information.

Oh, and e-mail...

AA's login and account screens are all encrypted.(RC4 128 bit, if anyone's interested)

As for email, what email service are you talking about? Work email? Gmail? Yahoo? What?

Macs are no more secure than Windows or Linux machines in this regard.

have also a look at http://kyps.net

it does not require any special client software on the public computer and lets you log into websites using OTPs...
