FAST external USB drive

Hi -

I need more space for virtual machines (running VMWare) and would like to get an external USB drive for them -- not just to store them, but to actually run them from the USB drive. Any suggestions as to durable, value priced, and most importantly FAST ones?

Thanks!

The problem is that they're all basically the same speed: the speed of the USB connection.

You can't mount another internal drive??

I've tried what you have in mind and the performance is pathetic. An eSATA drive might do the trick, though.

Bleh. An additional internal drive isn't really an option as the machine in question is a laptop.

I've got one of the fastest: Corsair Flash Voyager GT

Online tests show it's faster than the OCZ stuff. Prices are all pretty cheap these days.

Not big enough for loads virtual machines, but big enough for one or two, and certainly smoking fast. And cool looking. So I ordered one anyway, just for fun!

Definitely get an eSata drive. I have one that gets darn near 3 gbs transfers. I can do a backup of my 100 gig drive in less than hour -- it used to take 6.

How is that possible across USB?

It's not. I bought an eSata express card for my laptop and a eSata portable case (same size as a USB portable case). It works great.

VMWare does not work well when its multi-gig virtual machine files are located on a USB hard-drive. At least in my experience. The guest machine operates slooooow and sometimes becomes non responsive. Again, this in my experience across several laptops and desktops. But it's easy to test and try, just copy the files and go.

I haven't tried eSata HDs for this as metioned above, but based on what I've seen using USB drives, I'd be suspicious until I see it working acceptably.
