iTunes alternative compatible w/ iPod Touch?
My understanding is that the common WinXP iTunes alternatives for syncing content to an iPod, such as Winamp, do not work with the 2nd gen iPod Touch, due to a change in file-system encryption by Apple.
Is anyone familiar with a WinXP client that can sync content with the new Touch?

the OP wants to sync with software OTHER THAN iTunes so iTunes 8 would be the last piece of software the OP would want.

When I looked at this, what I noticed is that the ipod touch does not export it's storage as a disk device, and all the third party software depends on being able to access the storage as a standard usb disk. So, no, there was nothing available when I looked.
That was a while ago, when I first got mine, so I suppose it's possible that things have changed since then.
The third party programs simply understand how itunes stores files and its data base on the disk, and can access everything through the USB disk storage device. There is no equivalent for the ipod touch (and I imagine this is probably true for the iphone as well).
For the ipod touch, I'm guessing that somebody would have to write their own driver for it and understand the interface to get it to work.

I don't own an iPod so I cant say for sure but my brother has used Anapod Explorer in the past. Not sure if they support your device but it may be worth a look.

And that appears to be the challenge right now: None of the existing apps like NanoPod, Winamp, etc., have been able to come up with a driver. This is the kind of thing some on this board would accuse only Redmond of doing...

Sharepod is your program (just a standalone .exe, will also run from the ipod!)
www.getsharepod.com
From the help page:
Does SharePod support my iPhone / iTouch?
Yes! As of version 3.8.4, SharePod will let you copy tracks to and from your iPhone/iTouch

Only the first gen, and if you haven't updated the firmware on the ipod touch to 2.x:
http://www.getsharepod.com/help/iphone.aspx
I guess one-way is better than no-way, but still ...
There's also something called rockbox that is open source and supports ipods (as alternative firmware for them) but I have no idea if they support the ipod touch or not. The web site hasn't been responding.
update: their page still isn't up, but google's cached page says it's not for the ipod touch.

If you have an iPhone 3G or have upgraded your iPhone/iTouch to firmware 2.0, SharePod is currently unable to edit any music. Apple has locked the new versions from 3rd party applications. However, you can still copy music from the iPod to your computer.

Alternatives to iTunes?
I have an 8 gig Touch and recently had to replace my laptop....Windows Vista. My iTunes stopped functioning w/ my touch. I've uninstalled and still can't get it to work.
Would like an alternative, but need one that syncs notes, calendars, photos, podcasts, and applications as well as music!! HELP!!
Beth
I've checked out TouchCopy and it works fine, but not for applications, notes and/or calendar! Not complete enough for my purposes.

I had a similar problem with iTunes and Vista. I went here:
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=itunes and got the 7.6.029 version and installed that which worked after running through this procedure: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451 to recreate the library.

This is a pretty good service. The drawback is that your playlist is only available while you're online. It's free though.
Get Finetune for my iPhone!
I can't get the link to work but the Finetune App is available free from the app store on itunes.

Finally found an Winamp-compatible alternative
I downloaded this plugin yesterday and it worked like a charm. When I plugged in my Gen2 Touch, it showed up immediately within Winamp's media library--and no automatic loading of corpulent iTunes! ^
