IFE Technology

A nice article from IEEE Spectrum on some of the nitty-gritty that goes into IFE:

Interesting. My main whinge about all this flash new IFE is that it frequently doesn't work. On a recent Qatar Airlines trip the IFE played up on 3 of the 4 sectors to varying degrees. One time it didn't work at all, one time it was able to be rebooted, another it was working but very buggy, couldn't access all features. The only time it worked perfectly it was great as I could watch the BBC live. As a news junkie I found this wonderful and live TV on the IFE is definitely a winner for me.

I was on a domestic 9W flight where they rebooted 4 times. It was very difficult to watch anything. Worse than commercial breaks since I had to keep fast forwarding to where I was before the reboot.
