Thank you all for your constructive suggestions.
My notebook is now running fine. I had to go the "re-format" route as nothing else worked. I lost about 16 days' worth backup (on a monthly auto backup setup). Certainly learn from this and now I backup everyday.
Have not yet have time to take care of the desktop. It is not a urgent issue and I will get to it and time allows.
Once again, the FT community on this forum ROCKS ^^
