The CAS role is great and it provides a much better mobile experience, but it is not truly a "mobile user" role. Also, I do not believe that it changes the issue of sync'ing public folders.

There is a workaround in this case. Codetwo did an app that allows syncing public folders with private mailboxes automatically. It needs to be installed on the server. Once you sync public data with a default mailbox item, it can be easily accessed from iPhone or any other device that connects to Exchange default folders only.

Alternative to syncing public folders with smart phones is www.smartafone.com. We use them over a year now and its flawless. And the price is right!
