Iphone 3G Technical Questions

Since I am one of the first few people that got the Iphone yesterday I will kick start a technical thread on the phone. I will post the quetions and if I have time I will get answers from the Apple Store people. Moderators feel free to put this as a Sticky and edit where necceesary:

1) How long does it take to fully charge the Iphone and how come it does not have an indicator when it is off (for the Ipods there is an indicator when it is switched off on the screen).

2) Screen going off during VM - The screen just goes black when I start the voicemail icon or sometimes other items in the Phone section. Is this a specific setting?

3) WIFI-3G-2G - Is there a setting in place for this to automatically switch between modes depending ont he signal strength?

4) GPS - is the only app now the Google Maps that is preloaded on the phone. How do I actually use it as I can't seem to get the GPS kicked in? Is it a special setting?

As far as I know, you have to tell the phone to join WiFi networks. However, assuming you have 3G enabled, it will automatically jump between the 3G and 2G network depending on signal strength. Mine does this frequently at my house, since it appears I'm on the edge of 3G and 2G.

As far as I know, GPS only works with Google Maps. To have GPS find your location, tap the circle right next to the "search" tab on the bottom. If the button is pressed in, it'll turn darker blue and there will be circles that move out from the blue pin that drops on your location.

One question I've got for everyone: Has anyone ported a number from Verizon? How long did it take? It's been close to 12 hours since the folks at the Apple store requested the transfer, and I still receive calls on my Verizon phone. I can dial out on the iPhone just fine and the mobile internet works fine.

No. The 8320 supports the UMA standard for handling calls. There is a VOIP application for the iPhone, but it isn't as integrated as a UMA phone.

Wifi calls require Tmo's HotSpotAtHome service or similar. I'm sure that if AT&T offers an internet calling service the iPhone will support it.

Thanks. I'll probably stick to with the 8320 b/c the UMA mode is great. If the iphone is jailbreaked and you can use it on TMO, I am guessing it still won't work either.

Simple question. My son has an I-Pod Touch with songs loaded thru I-Tunes. How does he go about transferring these songs to his new I-Phone? Not surprisingly, there is no info included with the new I-Phone on doing this....and nobody at AT&T could give me an answer this morning. Just a simple laymans explanation would be appreciated.
Thanks !

just plug the iphone into the computer. itunes will see the new device and ask to sync his music library to it. he can copy the exact same music to it, or perhaps choose a different selection of songs.

if he bought music on the ipod touch, he'll want to sync the ipod prior to connecting the iphone to copy the new music back to the computer.

itunes will track multiple ipods/iphones without any problem.

I just find out there is a VOIP app already - Truphone. Don't know how god and reliable is this but worth a try?

Also another question.

Don't know why it takes forever to sync when I enable "contacts" to be sync (Outlook - on my laptop). It seems it is trying to resync everytime? I thought it will only sync if I added something new?

I have switched it off at the moment. Actually I have switched off all the Outlook stuff sync at the moment.

Like I said; there is a VOIP app, but it's nowhere near as nice or integrated as the UMA feature of the Blackberry.

Power Saving Feature in Phone Mode

I find the power saving mode in Phone mode to be annoying and not sure whether you can switch it off.
Basically when you dial a number and when you hold the phone to your year the screen automatically blacks out. However sometimes when you need to dial something while on the call the screen will not turn back on and you have to put the phone to standby and turn back on again.

Is there a way to fix this.

Also for the first tiem alst night whne I played around with the stupid rotary dial app the phone suddenly hanged and autoamtically restarted!!! hope it is not something wrong with the phone. I guess you shoudl periodically power the phone down and reboot it to avoid system crashes?

I'm having 2-3 freezes or crashes a day.

I'm putting it down to the firmware and hope a revised version will appear soon and it will settle down.

I wouldn't think AT&T would be the people to ask. There seems to be a strong delineation between 'phone and network' issues and 'iPod and iTunes' issues. AT&T just wants your $$ every month.
