iPhone for Verizon?

How can I make an IPhone work on Verizon? I heard that someone had hacked it.

You can't.

iPhone is made to only work on GSM-based networks (like AT&T). Verizon and Sprint are CDMA-based networks. They are completely incompatible with the iPhone. The only other U.S.-based network that the iPhone could possibly work, if hacked, is on T-Mobile, which is GSM-based.

Wirelessly posted (FlyerTalk.com/wap is fun : Opera/9.50 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.1.11313/528; U; en))

T-Mobile is the other major GSM carrier in the USA. Several smaller carriers exist that are GSM based. You can find a list of them in the roaming section of www.gsmworld.com

As far as comparable handsets for Verizon Wireless, take a look at the HTC 6900 (aka Sprint Touch), LG Venus, LG Voyager, Samsung Glyde, BlackBerry Pearl, and Palm Treo.

I wish Verizon people would stop asking about the iPhone. I'm sure when it happens, there will be headlines in all the newspapers and blogs. Since I'm one of two people we know of at the office with iPhones, I have been getting more and more people stopping by asking when it will be on Verizon.

I concur. Do some research first. 4 major providers (or 5, counting Alltel) in the US. 2 GSM, 2 (or 3) CDMA. iPhone is GSM and can only work on 2 at most, and AT&T has 2 year (1 year remaining) exclusivity with Apple. And on T-Mobile the new iPhone would kind of suck, since it's 3G but almost all of T-Mobile USA still lacks a 3G network.

Maybe in 2010 when the shift to 4G starts happening and 3 of those 4 carriers move to the same LTE technology, the whatever umpteenth generation iPhone will work on all those networks.

Even if T-mobile had a nationwide 3G network, it still wouldn't work thanks to the incompatible frequency they use

The closest phone that Verizon has to the iPhone is the XV6900 (HTC Touch) and it doesn't have all of the bells and whistles of the Apple product. However it does come with Windows Mobile 6 Professional which might be a plus to some people.

Otherwise there is the new Sprint Instinct (Samsung) model that looks like the iPhone that was just released.

My buddy swears by his iPhone... when he has service.

He just bought a MagicJack since he has no coverage in the hotel he is staying at. Since when did the phone part of mobile phones become a secondary feature?

Scott,

I don't understand:

TMO USA uses 1900 and some 850 MHz GSM. Both iPhones use these frequencies. The frequencies don't seem like the issue.

But the 3G does....

You're right for voice. But 3G is on different frequencies, even if on the same phone/carrier, and T-Mobile's frequency allocation for 3G is totally different than AT&T's and most of the rest of the world.

T-Mobile was allocated 3G frequencies in the 1700 MHz band, which is used nowhere else in the world for 3G or cell phone service of any kind. Just about everyone else in the world uses 2100 MHz for 3G service.

This is in addition to the existing cellular bands, which are different in North America than most other places. North America (and some parts of Latin America) uses 850 MHz and 1900 MHz for cell phone service while the rest of the world uses 900 MHz and 1800 MHz.
