I'm trying to figure this out.
I have a laptop with me but I have a G4 sitting at home with a spare hard drive on it that has backups of stuff I generally don't need when on the road. Now I've hit something I need and it's on that drive.
I can get to it if someone is at the computer at home and has ichat running, but what do I do when they are not present?
I'm thinking of setting up a VPN connection. How do I go about doing that?
Cheers and thanks in advance.

VNC is the easiest way to accomplish what you want to do.

I'm used to ssh in to my server but never done anything with vpn or vnc.
I also just found chax http://www.ksuther.com/chax/ which I will install on the home desktop as soon as.

Thanks! Will look in to that a bit more. But at first glance, looks like home mac needs to be on static IP, which it isn't.Originally Posted by njxbean

no. it doesnt need to be on a static IP. even using DHCP, your home mac will likely keep the same IP address. And you just need to configure port mapping on your router and your in business. That link goes over that as well.Originally Posted by Emma65

If it was static enough that you could ssh into it then it is static enough for VNC. It is just a GUI access rather than a CLI.Originally Posted by Emma65

I said I was ssh:ing in to my server. Not to my home G4. Two different computers. ;-)Originally Posted by sbm12

I just tested chax here and it seems to do exactly what I need it to so am well happy with that. Am going to install that on the home mac as soon as I get someone over there to be at it.
