eeePC 4GB and even embedded XP, trying to use that I feel for you, will be maddening.
8GB should be bare minimum. 4GB with Linux I don't even know why they sell the 2GB model it is full from the start.

XP runs perfectly on the 4G machine. A full install of XP (without media player) comes in at a little over 2.3Gb. Which leaves plenty of space for swap files or other stuff. Pop an 8Gb SD card in the machine and you can install Office 2007 (1.2Gb) and have loads of space for some music or movies.

It's not maddening, and runs extremely smooth. Even fairly CPU intensive applications like Slingplayer run just fine on it.
