Sony Ericsson X1?

I need a new phone and I'm thinking of becoming an early adopter of the X1 in the US. That, or waiting for the 3G iPhone. Leaning towards the X1 at the moment. Anyone have one who can comment on how it works in real life?

Well, it's just Windows Mobile. Nothing special or different about that. The demo videos that were going around when the prototype was shown don't really manage to convey the suck that is WinMo, and it looks like it runs Pro, which means you have to poke at the screen with one of those teeny, tiny sharp sticks. The zoomy icon thing everyone (including me) was excited about turns out to be nothing more than a launcher. As soon as you get one layer deep, it's back to a UI that looks like shareware from Windows 3.0. After getting used to the iPhone, I don't think I could ever go back to using something like this for my every day device.

If you're resigned to the OS, though, it looks like a really sexy form factor. That costs 2 1/2 iPhones.

Pro's over the iPhone:

Expandable memory
real GPS
3G
Decent Bluetooth (with stuff like stereo audio support)
Good camera
Massive screen resolution
Hardware keyboard
1000's of applications already in the marketplace

Cons over the iPhone:

It runs Windows Mobile - it'll work fine, but you'll often be a little annoyed
It might not be as pretty
Price
Not "finger friendly"

Of course, my pro's and con's are based on the CURRENT iPhone. By the time the X1 is out, there may or may not be a new iPhone.

There are some things in the X1 I don't think we'll ever see in an iPhone; a hardware keyboard, real GPS and decent enterprise support. Yes; the iPhone is getting Exchange, but there are still things you can do with a WinMo device that I don't see an iPhone ever doing.

I've been running my HTCTyN with a finger. Once you add Touchflo to it, it works pretty good. It is not an iPhone, but my stylus rarely comes out of the unit. With the Picsel Browser, I have a similar zoom in and zoom out of the iPhone.

Microsoft is beefing up its OS as we speak. Apple is introduce version 2.0 of its OS, and we've all just seen a few snipets on the S-E offering. Unless you have a compelling reason to be the first kid on the block, I'd wait a couple of months to see who is a winner.

I like the iPhone a great deal, but don't like living in someone else's walled garden. The iPhone's serious competition is launching as we speak. (Note: Samsung is also launch an iClone). We're still in the Spring Season. I'd wait to declare a winner.
