t40 memory upgrade

I've got a T40 w/ 512mb of RAM that needs to be upgraded. It's only got a single accessible memory slot so I want to upgrade that with a 1024mb chip. The documentation states that I can use either PC2100 or PC2700 memory. In looking around at pricing I've noticed that I can buy a PC4200 SODIMM for about half the price of a PC2700.

If I were to purchase this type of memory, will it be backwards compatible and run at the slower speed or am I just better off buying the more expensive memory?

thx.
