Are all SD devices nowadays compatible with SDHC?

I'd like to install a new car radio, and I've found a nice (and cheap!) Blaupunkt one that doesn't take a CD (!!), but does have an SD slot. SDHC is not specifically mentioned.
Shall I take it for granted that it can read any sort of SD card (I'm going to use a miniSD with a size-adaptor for the SD slot), or will I get stuffed trying to use my 8 GB one?
I may be calling Blaupunkt to ask tomorrow, but I trust FTers more.

I've found more that are than that are not. But most of those are more expensive devices. Cheap SD readers are usually still not compatible.

But if you are referring to the Melbourne SD27 then no, it will not take SDHC.

Bollox! I did have the SD27 in mind!
Would you have any idea about the JVC KD-SH1000? I'd quite like to be able to use the stalk controls on the BMW steering wheel, so I'm prepared to pay for something better than what I actually need.

(For some reason, I can't edit previous post to add the info, so I'm writing here)
I was quite happy with a Roadstar or even Nikkai (actually it's a bit rustic and looks great in a 1996 dashboard!), but I'm told that only the "major brands" (whatever that may mean, but they definitely include JVC and Blaupunkt) offer adaptors that will work with the stalks.

Hi. I'm also looking into the SD27 and am looking for the mysterious solution to how big a card it supports. I read the manual and it only says it supports FAT16 and FAT32.

I've just researched these formats and learned that FAT32=SDHC. I suppose it's possible to make FAT32 cards that are less than 4GB, but the purpose of FAT32 is to allow capacities 4GB and higher.

This is where I'm running into trouble. I saw a customer reviewer that said he used a 4GB card with the SD27. I presumed that support for FAT32 means support for SDHC, but I decided to email Bosch technical support to get the straight answer.

Unfortunately I'm not pleased with the answer I got. They said the maximum size supported is 2GB. I complained that this doesn't make sense when the unit supports FAT32 and the whole purpose of FAT32 is to go over 2GB. I've got CD mp3, and three times the capacity is not enough to make the switch to SD. I want at least 4GB in the unit, preferably 8GB. I'm looking to not have to swap anything out anymore.

They said the reason for the 2GB limit is lack of compatibility with >2GB cards. It would have been nice if they'd given me more info instead of treating me like an idiot, but that's all I got out of them. I asked what cards >2GB would work and am awaiting a reply.

Does anyone here know exactly what the compatibility problem is?
Thanks!

I have a Navigon 5100 GPS device that takes SD cards. It comes with a 2GB card but supports 4GB cards. I bought both a 4GB SD (non HC) card and a 4GB SDHC card. The Navigon can read the full 4GB on the SDHC card but only the first 2GB of the non-HC card. That was true even when I formatted the non-HC card as FAT32. So there must be a difference in the addressing scheme between HC and non-HC cards for addressing the memory above the first 2GB.

Welcome to Flyertalk, cobrasteve. It's all mysterious. Actually, if you've got a 6 CD changer that plays mp3s, the 2GB card can't even keep half the music you've got there!
Alas, my CD changer can't read MP3s and I'm currently confined to the tape adaptor.
What may be possible would be to use a 8gb USB stick instead. This one looks cheap and convenient enough, but I bet they'll manage to find a deal breaker just for our sake.

That's not the ONLY thing FAT32 was good for. FAT32 also allows a 2gb partition to be used with smaller block sizes. You'd be amazed how fast a bunch of 1kb files can fill up a 2gb FAT16 partition.

Sorted!

Bought an Sandisk 8GB microSDHC, and it comes with a USB micro-SD reader, which you can plug into any USB-capable radio. ^
