External Hard Drive (Crossover Cable) - Help!

Hi, I need some help...

I've an external hard drive (WD, MyBookWorld), which has an ethernet connection and I want to connect it to my laptop without a router in between.

I've a crossover cable and can connect the hard drive and laptop together. While Vista can see the connection, I can't see the hard drive. I tried changing the IP address of my laptop to be on the same subnet 192.168.1.xxx as the hard drive and have switched off 'getting an IP address automatically', (that's something I read somewhere on the web), but it made no difference.

What do I need to do?

Thanks.

P.S. I've a ADSL/wireless router spare, but I can't seem to use it as a pure router. Is that possible?

Are you sure the external drive has a static IP? (meaning it's got a "set" IP address). Most likely the WD is looking for a DHCP server on your network to get an address assigned to it. Doesn't the thing have a USB port as well as ethernet?

Is the ethernet connection the only one available on the mybook? It would be a lot easier to use a usb or other connection if it's availabe.

It's probably looking for a dhcp server. Does the documentation or support site for your network drive tell you how to configure it with a static IP address?

edit: Never mind .. Scott just said the same thing.

If you know the connection is good and you have the MAC address of the
external storage (HD/NAS) Add the mac address in the arp table on
your PC and give it some IP address.

from the command line you type in

arp -s ipaddress-for-hd mac-address-hd

example:

arp -s 192.168.1.123 00-aa-00-bb-00-cc

then you can try to ping 192.168.1.123 (whatever address you've assigned) and see if its alive.

It has a USB slot, but it's more for expansion, not connections.

This is the device http://www.wdc.com/en/products/produ...18&language=en

Cool, thanks for your help. I've turned DHCP back on, and it's all working now. I'm not entirely sure what I did differently this morning compared to last night when I tried till 2am, but it's working now. I think my laptop had some IP address settings recorded when the cable company set up cable Internet a while ago and haven't removed the settings, so when I was mucking around with this, it (and I) go confused. At the end of last night, I removed all the settings and this morning, I made sure DHCP was on, then bingo!

Woohoo and a big thank you!

don't most of the worlds have USB, FW and Ethernet? I thought only the 1T B and 2TB versions could come in ethernet only
