I DID manage to use a t-mobile hotspot for about six months, six years ago with a cantenna mounted on my second story balcony. That signal was about six city blocks away, across a park. There was not line of sight, but there wasn't a bunch of buildings in between either. Some studies have shown, 2 miles is achievable, and even GREATER distances if you really want to get some hardware in there.

I might give it a go then, if I find some money down the back of the sofa during my week off (whenever I manage to take that).
