in DEN now and my Ipod 40g (1yr old) suddenly wont turn off. tried resetting etc....

any advice... hate to bring down my cr700 DEN- STL in an hour as the battery wont be depleted by then

Hold down the bottom button of the scroll wheel for 5 seconds.

you may need to re-set the iPod:

* Pod nano (3rd generation)
* iPod classic
* iPod (5th generation)
* iPod nano (2nd generation)
* iPod nano
* iPod with color display (iPod photo)
* iPod (Click Wheel)
* iPod mini
* iPod mini (2nd generation)

1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.

Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

Thx for the tip. Got it to reset, but still won't turn off. The bottom click wheel switch works as I and go from 'pause' to 'play' ... just wont shut down if I continue to hold.

Doesnt respond any better when on computer power

Not sure about your version. My iPod photo has a switch on top which prevents it being inadvertently turned on or off. It took me several days to figure it out. On the top of mine where the headphone jack is, there is the switch. Make sure the orange isn't showing.

And sometimes it takes a while for mine to turn off anyway.

My 80GB Video keeps doing that from time to time (got it back in January). It also randomly cuts off certain songs. It's such a piece of crap. I should have just stuck with my trusty 40GB Photo.

(I wonder if I can send it back to AMEX (using Purchase Protection, or whatever it's called) and get one of the new ones. Anyone ever done this?)

Yeah, but sometimes that doesn't work. When that happens, I just press pause and let it turn off by itself (which it does after about two minutes).

The only other thing I've seen posted for when the reset didn't work (wife had that issue, reset worked on hers) was to let the battery drain all the way down, and when it was recharged it was fine again.

Only seen one post on that, so it may not be the most reliable solution.

My second generation Nano has the same problem, and that's what I do too, but it BUGS me... It seems like the Apple interface has a sophisticated sense of "state." There are times when I have accidentally put the device into the "replay a portion of a song" state or somesuch. There doesn't seem to be any visible indication of which state the device is in. State of confusion...

yep... stopped working today for some reason however

did the reset thing 3 times and the 3rd time it worked...

I read that Steve Jobs hates buttons and "loves simplicity of design"; note that whenever he announces a new product he shows up with a mock turtleneck shirt with No Buttons. Not many buttons on the iPhone either.

If it were designed intelligently, you could just take the battery out. I won't own anything that won't let me change to a fresh battery when it runs down.
