he's probably referring to the lid, which is metal. the rest of it is plastic, of course. my D600 (yeah yeah, company is stingy and won't shell out for a new one) has held up quite well the last couple of years. hasn't had to be rebuilt yet (knock on wood) and soda on the keypad has had no effect, other than the annoying "sticky keys". gonna have to figure out how to clean that sucker up one of these days.

Is the unit going to be stationary? If so why bother with a laptop at all? For less money, you can get a desktop unit with more "horsepower" and a better screen position and quality than any laptop unit can provide.

It's not going to be stationary, it's just that if it's lugged it's almost always in a car. If I'm home I'm going to be using the machine I'm posting this from--3x 19" screens, 4gb ram, admittedly a hyperthread rather than dual-core processor. (I'm waiting for Microsoft to get the kinks out of Vista so I can go past 4gb with the next machine.)
