+1. B&R is somewhat less expensive, too. Tumi is nice but IMO overpriced.

Waht do you guys think of the Tumi tri-fold garment bag? I spoke with a flyer today who has had a relatively good experience with it. Your thoughts are welcome.

FYI my goal is to be able to travel domesticly up to 6days with out checking a bag. Ideally this bag would help for a few dress shirts/slacks and maybe a suit. Thanks...

What other bags are you carrying with you?

Usually a 21" carry on. This is however not the focus as I am inquiring about the tumi tri fold garment bag and it's effectiveness... thanks

I understand that you are inquiring about the tri fold. Based on your answer - are you planning to not carry the 21" with the tri fold or are you just hoping to just carry the tri fold on only. If you are trying to go 6 days with only a tri fold it will be pretty difficult. Not impossible but will be difficult. The tri fold is only good for one day - max two days.

No the Tumi would be in addtion to the carry on for a total of 2 carry-on pieces.

I had one of the earliest tumi leathers, but it started to tear and fade after about 500K miles. Tumi replaced it, with is ONE CLEAR BENEFIT of the tumi products in their top lines.

I then bought one of the T2 lines, I think they are now called Tumi Tech line. I really liked the bags, messenger type and briefcase / laptop type. I think they were better value, and actually for me more functional. I didn't really care if it wasn't executive type leather and style. that bag was lost in a volcano explosion in Ecuador. I'm not saying the bag was destroyed and that it didn't survive the explosion, but the HOUSE that it was in didn't and was covered with ASH, so I basically abandoned the bag.

So, I bought the Victorinox bags, and I REALLY like them. I think their weight is better, even with the balistic nylon, and their features are better for me.

they are quite a bit cheaper as well, we have bought several differant bags for differant LT's and purposes, usually at the baggage store in the mall, which has them for about 40% off usually.

Tumi has many problems. It is overpriced. Thanks to that, it screams "steal me" to all less than honest persons. It comes with poor warranty, poorer yet if you buy from an outlet.

You should look for a well-made bag which is priced reasonably and is not a well-known snob-appeal name. I like Briggs and Riley but I am sure there are other options.

How tall are you? The tri-fold is awesome if you're taller -- my longbodied 6'2" husband has one and it fits his jackets without them wrinkling at the bottom. It's light for it's size so you're not hauling a bunch of luggage weight. And it can fit 1 pair of size 14 shoes in it, along with one size 56 suit, one pair of slacks and 3 shirts -- though it's rather round at that fullness.

For a smaller person, it's not as good because the lenth is hard to use to your advantage. So at 5'5", my trousers hang in such a way that the inside fold gets the double thickness all the time unless I stagger the hanging lengths.

Personally, I don't like that the end to which the hook is attached is the inside fold -- makes it hard to hang it up and change in the bathroom, you need to lie it down to get it unclipped and hung up unless you have a +6' wingspan.

So, really, it depends on how tall you are. If you need that extra length for your jackets, it's the bomb-diggitdy, if you don't then there are better choices.

Tumi is great, but overpriced. I switched to Tumi when Hartmann started charging for repairs.

When my Tumi rolling garment bag was "mishandled (and never showed up), i was going to buy another but was talked into Briggs and Riley because of UNCONDITIONAL guarantee.

It breaks, is cut, airplane rolls over bag...whatever, it is repaired at no charge, forever.

Ya can't beat that. Plus it's less expensive than Tumi or Hartmann.

I travel with the following.

FXT G4 22 inch wheeled non expandable.
FXT G4 Classic Garment bag
FXT G4 Expandable Computer bag.

All of my trips start out as United Express RJ flights so the two bigger ones get gate checked and I carry on my computer bag. I usually travel in F or C so I have plenty of room for my bags in the bins and keep my computer bag on the floor in front of me. You do have to be careful that you don't over fill your classic garment bag. It has lots of room and it is tempting to load it up but then it makes it hard to fit in the overhead.

Nothing about Tumi, but I do recommend Briggs and Riley. I have gone through Travelpro and Victorinox leather computer bags. Each bag the shoulder strap broke off. I am now using a Briggs and Riley that has lasted over 3 years.
