I carry many with me for work every day. Starting with at WD160GB, a LaCie120GB (ruggage), some other LaCie 100, 80, and 60 GB. They all work well except the older 60GB took to the trash a few weeks ago, so after three years of use, it was time to go and move up.

And this WD drive really is small, light and looks cool ^

I've actually had more flash drives fail than external HDDs. I've now had three SanDisk Cruzers fail (2GB, 1GB and an old 256 MB) and had a WD 160 GB Passport external drive fail as well. Fail here means corrupted data and inability to format successfully again, so not just garden variety data corruption. SanDisk does replace the failed flash drives, but the data is lost. Costco replaced the errant WD drive as it is easier than dealing with WD. No one can (or should) replace the false sense of security from trusting any single storage method!

Thus, don't put absolute faith in flash disks. I back up critical files (client or investor presentations) to flash disk, external HDD and burned CD now.

For the photographers, you might want to consider the HyperDrives/Jobo Gigi Ones too (and drives of that ilk ... they have built in card reader sockets so they can copy your data from a card onto a hard disk without the need for a computer.... plus they make convenient external drives with card readers built in...

Cool thanks for the info - sounds ideal. Do they also have a USB cable for non-photographers?

External Hard Drive

So... I need an external Hard Drive.
I'll be using it to keep photos and my growing itunes music/movie library. I can see wanting to carry it with me occasionally on longer trips, but probably not all the time.

So I'm debating between something like this that's cheaper and holds more, and something like this thats more portable, and well, they're just so cute.

Thoughts? Should I go with something else entirely?

I like the ones that are powered off of the USB port and that need no external power supply or adapter.

Here's what I bought recently

They also make it USB. I have an 80GB one which I have dragged all over the world to back up photos. I haven't put my music on it, though. I have dropped it and it seems OK.

Good deal for a good drive. I use mine sparingly (back-up once every month or two and then stick it in our fireproof safe) but haven't had a problem and it's USB powered. Only complaint is the included USB cable is VERY short. I tried using another one and my computer didn't recognize the drive.

External drive for PC & MAC?

Not to hijack thread or anything, but does anyone have any recommendations for an external drive that would work with both PC's and Macs? I need something with backup software that is incredibly easy to use on both (otherwise, they won't use it.) (TMK, the mac people are not running Leopard - yet.)

Back OT:
For myself, I travel with a Simpletech 16 GB USB memory stick and a 60GB portable drive (forget the brand). These are for backup only, the memory stick for data files and the drive for a snapshot of my laptop hard drive. For software, I use ViceVersa Pro, which is very easy to use, once you have it set up the way you want.

Some USB cables don't seem to have all of the pins. Try one that's supposed to work with digital cameras and you should be fine. There is no magic in the WD cable. There seem to be two kinds of cables floating around, and phone/electronic dealers like to tell you that their cables are somehow better. You don't have to spend $40 to get a cable that works. I'm sure one of our resident experts will tell us the real differences.

Good on ya for saving the $10. I bought my Asus eee PC there, and forgot I've used Google Checkout before, so I didn't get the $10 off. So when I bought this $81 USB drive yesterday, I used Buy.com's own checkout procedure.

My experience is that people using PayPal and Google Checkout at Buy.com have to wait several days before the order finishes processing and is sent to warehouse. It's annoying, they're not up front about it at all. Just like with free shipping - they don't select it for you.

Anyway, I placed my hard drive order late last night, and it's already in "Sent to warehouse" status - I'm curious if you wouldn't mind sharing when your Google Checkout order reaches that point.

I've ordered dozens of items from Buy.com, both using their checkout system and Google checkout and I've never noticed a difference in when I get stuff. The only caveat is during the different holiday seasons they do seem to get bogged down with orders and it takes a bit longer than usual to get through all the steps.
