In any case, wherever you went is NOT the shop I recommended in a different terminal in the other thread in this post. It seems that one or two other FT members have followed these instructions with success.
I'm going to NCE through CDG Sunday.
44 av Jean Médecin
06000 NICE
Tel. 04 93 76 72 87
FNAC is at www.fnac.fr
Otherwise, seek out Tabacs or maybe groceries which may be open.

Yes, the Orange website is not the most user friendly.
Nevertheless, I think your prices for a phone are unrealistic considering that pre-paid phones are by and large not very subsidized by the carriers. The Mobicarte SIM card alone is €30 (discounted to €15 on the website).

Can anyone else who is a Mobicarte user confirm?

"Included in the SIM card:
4.5€ of calls and 10 text messages
10 min or 100 Kb of access in the Orange World portal [web service]"

If you can find anyone who speaks French, have him or her call Orange customer service at 011 33 6 07 62 64 64 and try asking. Granted, that even if you speak French this may not work, but it's the best I can do.
I see lots of €1 for a phone on the site but my assumption is these are for customers willing to sign for a long/short term contract. . .
Ouch, this makes it a non-starter for me as the majority of my time in Europe will be in Italy.
Here's another thought. Take a look at http://www.call-in-europe.com/cgi-bi...nchcorner.html
I do not know this company and have never dealt with them but I learned of them through an e-mail from a French organization here in NYC.
From now on, people who want cell phone info from me have to do my duty free shopping.

The stores at the airports and even train stations are out of the Virgin Mobile SIMs.
They seem to have a special going on right now where if you buy the SIM for 15 Euros and then top off with a 5 Euro card, you get a .27 Euro cents per minute rate instead of the usual .40 Euro cents or so.

Casino Store At CDG
I'm working late on a project and since some advice I have previously given was called into question, I decided to call the shop I recommended at CDG just now. (It's 7:30 A.M. in France.)
The woman I spoke to was quite cordial.
- They sell Mobicarte telephones;
- They sell Mobicarte SIM cards;
- They sell Mobicarte scratch-off cards;
- They are open on Sunday.

Tennisbum,
If you really stay 5 months a year in france, you might as well get a Mani Travel (manifone.com) number to let your family call you on a US number that rings on your french phone. It's probably easier and cheaper for them than calling your french mobile.

This website is unbelievable confusing. If your suggestion is to use there services so someone in the United States can call France cheaply, it is already possible to buy unlimited monthly calls to France from a variety of US companies like Verizon and Cablevision.

I just want a cheap French cellphone service to use within France, in more-or-less emergency situations (such as, when my train to Paris was delayed for 7 hours).

Bouygues is very cheap but coverage is only good in cities (even then not everywhere- montmartre is spotty). SFR has great coverage and allows roaming all throughout europe on vodafone, even with pay-as-you-go; but there's a 1 euro surcharge per call in foreign countries. You can recharge with vodafone vouchers. Orange is a good middle ground- no roaming, minutes are cheaper than SFR, coverage is pretty good everywhere in france.
A bouygues or orange sim is generally 15 euro, an SFR sim is 30 euro but for 40 euro you can get a phone AND sim.

I'm trying to find Orange locations in Paris, especially the 6th arr. and am having no luck with the website. I understand from these discussions that the Place de Madeleine has great service but don't know if I'll get over there immediately so need to know the St. Germain locations-can anyone help? Thanks.

If you are in Paris, look for the major chains like FNAC, Virgin, Darty etc. I don't see a listing for a company-owned Orange shop in the 6th but there is one in the 8th at: 16 pl Madeleine, 75008 PARIS.

126 bd St Germain
118 rue de Rennes
Darty:
104 bd St Germain
There are Phone House boutiques at:
149 rue de Rennes
4 rue de Buci
127 rue de Sèvres
and various other phone stores around the 6th, I believe. You should be able to buy Orange SIM cards at any of them.
This is according to the Pages Jaunes, anyway... I haven't checked out the locations personally.
