Acrobat Reader/Writer

Would consider purchasing too, just think $500 software for an enhanced Microsoft Word is outrageous. Any good deals out there to acquire the software or obtain a longer term trial?

Why would you want to buy it?
Reader is free.
Other PDF encoders like primoPDF are free.

I use PDFCreator. Installs as a print driver, and provides pretty much everything you need. Defaults are fine for most purposes.

CutePDF is great. I also have the free PDF writer plugin for Office 2007.

the only reason i purchased acrobat pro is because of a student discount (30 to 50 bucks, forget exact number). since i'm a student, i don't actually make documents. i mainly use pro for

1) making pdfs (see other posts for free software to do the same)
2) extracting parts of existing pdfs to picture and eps/ps files
3) typing into existing pdfs

number 3 is probably the most useful. for pdfs that have forms you can type directly into, pro version allows you to save the pdf, while reader makes you print it and if you close it, the info you entered is gone. if there is no fields to type into, pro lets you type directly onto the page, a la typewriter.

i wouldn't pay more than 50 to 100 bucks for this

Acrobat doesn't have most of the functions of Word--it's completely different. Adobe does sell Acrobat v.8 Pro for $459, but also sells the "Standard" version for $299. Do you really need whatever features are extra on the Pro version?

I agree that Acrobat Pro has a different mission from Microsoft Word.

If you want an inexpensive, Word compatible program that can also render directly into PDF, take a look at StarOffice.

Otherwise you can use the free PDF rendering options already mentioned.

I used this for awhile (since I would love to have an alternative to Adobe Reader, since it doesn't play nicely with Firefox) but it rendered documents from back to front so that the first page showing was actually the last page of the document. Very annoying.

My own favorite free pdf writer is Win2Pdf from www.daneprairie.com For XP or Win2000. Free for non-commercial use.

Wirelessly posted (Nokia E61i: Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.1; U; en-us) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413 es61i)

Microsoft Word 2007 have everything I need when it comes to generating/creating PDF documents. The plugin is free and it's available for download from Microsoft directly. For everything else, I just use Adobe Reader.

I have learned this the hard way... install Reader before Writer. The other way around makes IE go crazy.

In my opinion, if you're doing stuff like that, you ought to be using industry standard tools. Imagine a huge press run that's due tomorrow and the offset house can't deal with your files.....
