Back in the day, Compuserve hosted the only real moderated bbs forums available including TravSig, the largest moderated travel forum available.
At that time, there was third party software available by the name of OzCis and later OzWin.
This software would on the first pass
1. log onto Compuserve
2. obtain any waiting private messages/e-mail
3. go to all subscribed forums and obtain a list of message threads with posts since the user last logged in.
4. obtain any private messages from subscribed forums.
5. log off
Because Compuserve had a text-based interface, the amount of time logged in to do this would be short even for dial-up connections.
After finishing the first pass, the user would then, while off-line would
1. read and respond to any private messages/e-mails
2. mark any message threads that they wanted to read
3. subscribe to message threads-the software would download all posts to a given thread in the future.
The software would then on the second pass
1. send any private messages/emails and again receive any new ones.
2. obtain all new messages on selected message threads
The software woud then take all the posts to threads and orgainize into threads or add them to previous posts for a particular thread creating a database of messages for a given forum.
The off-line user could then, at their leisure
1. read and respond to any new e-mails or private messages
2. read and respond to various message threads
After this, the software would then again log-in and
1. post and retrieve any new e-mails/private messages
2. post any responses to various message threads.
The above is is the most commonly used configuration of OzCIS/OzWin. The software could be configured in different ways to obtain whatever info was needed.
With this setup, you could obtain new messages and mark threads to download. Then on the next pass, obtain all new posts for a thread. You could then, go to the airport and board your flight. During the flight, you could read and respond to any message thread. On arrival at your destination, you could then upload any responses.
Something like this would be a nice step for FlyerTalk.
Would I pay for it? Just give me an address for PayPa!!
