Think about windows mail. Its the replacement for Outlook Express that comes bundled in with Vista and has lots of cool new features.
BTW - I love Outlook 2007 and have had no issues with it

I hadn't really thought this through, thanks... it will come with MS Works 8 pre-installed whether I want it or not (included in price), which would qualify for an upgrade to one of the suites... sweet! maybe I should just get her Standard...

If Works comes with the 'puter, then you already have a way for Mom to view and edit Word and Excel files, plus a PowerPoint viewer. If you use Outlook Express...then perhaps you need buy nothing.
If it's Works Suite 2006, then Word 2002 comes with it.
