Microsoft VirtualPC 2007 - FREE!
Microsoft VirtualPC is a program that creates a virtual PC within a window that is isolated from the rest of the machine -- it's like having two (or more) computers at once. Microsoft is giving away the 2007 version, which runs under Vista. VirtualPC will run a number of different operating systems. I've just installed XP Pro on a VirtualPC running under Vista on my laptop. This is one way to use XP programs that won't run under Vista. The only catch is you have to have a separate license for each operating system that you install.
You can download it here:
www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx
Incidentally, from what I understand, VirtualPC will run Linux -- this is a good safe way to try out Linux without having to lose your primary OS.

And more than Vista:
Virtual PC 2007 runs on: Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Tablet PC, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, and Windows Vista Ultimate.

I've been wondering how fast Windows for Workgroups 3.11 would run on my Dual Core laptop
I still have the disks, although no disk drive

Also, I didn't realize it would run under XP as well. Definitely time to start playing around with Linux, I think.

If you're looking to play with Linux, I'd suggest using one of the "live" CD/DVD distros rather than cluttering up your hard drive by installing an OS you may not like/use to run under VirtualPC.

Virtual PC is a great product, although personally I use Virtual Server (also free) more often. Keep in mind that unless you have hardware support for virtualization, performance can really suck until you install the VM Additions.

It though MS won't say VPC 2007 installs and runs perfectly fine under XP home (I run it this way.) I am running debian linux at home as well as FreeNAS at work. Works great!!! Both were installed from cd iso image.
Much easier and less expensive than creating a new standalone system
Only problem is that there are problems running Ubuntu on VPC 2007.
