Looking For A Simple LAN Based IM Program With Small Footprint - Net Send Alternative
I'm wondering if anyone knows of an instant messaging program that will work on a lan. Similar to net send but hopefully a little better interface. Features I'm looking for include:
*Small foot print, hopefully no software to install as far as registry changes. E.g. perhaps could run from a flash drive;
*Possibly simple encryption;
*Easy to use.
Example uses might be:
*Im with buddies in the office at a company where the organization has n o IM program;
*IM with people all staying in same hotel over the hotel LAN;
*Consultants all working in a field office and need to IM without internet access, etc.
Again looking for something like net send but just a little better?

Trillian Pro will do serverless IM, but only the paid version. It's $25. Zim pro is pretty good, and it's free.

You don't specify what OS, but most recent versions of Windows come with Netmeeting built-in, which does what you're looking for. It's not always in the start menu though - The easiest way to start it up is to click run and type conf.exe
You can make shortcuts to it if it doesn't already exist on the machines.

Since there is no net send command in Windows 7 and Vista, we start to use Bigant messenger to create a private chat group inside house and they offer 10users free license.
