DSL Modem Needs 10 Days to Learn?

This evening we received the ATT home installation kit for DSL. This is intended to replace high-speed internet over cable, which has not worked as reliably as we hoped in our location.

Anyway, the DSL modem has a bright red sticker which reads:
ATTENTION
To maximize connection speed, leave this modem on for 10 days after DSL installation is complete.

Please note:
  • You can use your DSL service during this time
  • It is not necessary to leave your computer on, only the modem
Can someone explain what it is about DSL technology that requires 10 days of learning time for the modem???

Thank you.

They probably do some remote tests once a week or so and send back some commands to tweak the modem or the router. It may only happen once every ten days, so it's necessary to be on for ten days to make sure it gets the exchange.

It's also possible they do remote software upgrades, and it may take a few days for it to transfer all that information.

There is no reason to ever turn a DSL modem off. I suppose some people that don't know any better might. I'll go with what cordelli said; probably will do some testing and push down updates to the unit.
