Recommendations Needed: SMS Device

I'm an avid user of my Verizon Wireless Blackberry 8703. I use it primarily to communicate via email and SMS in the US.

However, I plan to be overseas in the next few weeks (Canada, Netherlands, Romania and France) and am in need of a device that will, at a minimum, allow me to communicate via SMS.

Is there something I need to buy for the Blackberry or should I be renting a phone each time I arrive at an airport?

Consider buying a GSM device and even possibly a global SIM card if you want to keep the same number. Global SIMs are available as prepaid and postpaid. There are plenty of threads on this forum although I would suggest a google search. I have a nifty setup with a toll free USA number that forwards to my UK mobile number. I get free, unlimited incoming calls and free incoming SMS. Costs about $0.35 per minute on average outbound...certain areas have higher costs than others.

A little google magic... You can rent a GSM BB from verizon.

Or move to tmobile which offers an unlimited global roaming BB plan.
