Microsoft Office

Any recommendations on best Microsoft Office package and place to purchase for Word, Powerpoint and Excel for XP? There are so many packages available, Office Pro, Office 2003, etc. Appreciate recommendation on basic package that can be used for the home. Thanks in advance.

Office 2003 Standard should so you just fine, assuming all you need is Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Office XP Standard gets you the same suite though it's a revision earlier. If you're looking for the latest and greatest, then it's Office 2007 Standard, though you'll be shelling out some serious cash for this one.

If you're feeling a bit adventurous, you might give Open Office a try. You can't beat the price.

It took me a while to come around to OO, but I really love openoffice now.

I agress with winkydink, Open Office, for the low cost of nothing is worth a try. It does basically everything that Office can do. If you want to go with office, 2003 standard is good, or wait for office 2007.

If it's any help, the interface has been reworked for Office 2007.

I'd have to agree. Openoffice makes MS Office Suite redundant for most people. It is a phenomenal piece of freeware.

I keep a copy of OO on my usb key, just in case I run into a machine that doesnt have MS Office on it. Also, when coming across a machine that has everything locked out, even usb slots, and no office, I use the apps that google allows access to online. Not the greatest but functional when in a bind.

You can save a lot of money if you pick up the Students and Teachers edition.

I know that OO has some VBA-like capability ... is it as powerful as VBA (intellisense, COM, Windows API access, etc)?

In a word, no. If you're looking for advanced functionality in Excel, it's not 100% compatible.

Never used OO before until I had a serious problem in opening (it would not open) a large EXCEL file that has thousands of formats and styles. Panic set in. I went to MS expert forum for advise. One guy from Toronto, Canada suggested I tried OO. After some fumbling around with it in download, install etc.. Got it going and it OPENED my file!! Wow!! I was sold since.
As said in another post, the price is right.

You can sometimes do the same thing with "corrupt" word docs as well.

I had a very happy client once when I managed to recover her "corrupt" word file by opening it in OO and then resaving it back to Word Format!!

SO is an ex-professor. We didnt find it all that easy to get the student/teacher edition, and in the end bought standard for not much more by shopping around. Next time, I think I'd try OO, but I love many of the Outlook features I've grown accustomed to.

Thanks so far...is it ok to buy a student edition if you have a K-12 student or do they mean college student? Is it harder to get updates if you have a student edition?
