FuturePhone

Anybody see the article in the NY Times mentioning this?

http://www.futurephone.com/

Free International Calls for the cost of a call to Iowa.

Depending on you plan a call from a cell would be free.

I've called Thailand and the UK using the service.

Regards,

Scho

I agree but... Why would a company want to pickup the tab for free international long-distance just to get your phone number. There are many other ways to buy lists or simply to dial in sequence using automatic dialer...

And you could always try using *69 when calling the gateway... When dialing an 800# you can't hide your number but since we are calling a local number in the USA *69 should work. They would of course be able to collect all the numbers you are calling in other countries...

Maybe this is a DHS initiative to keep track on budget conscious terror cells calling home

Somewhere I saw that they will eventually make you listen to a short ad before allowing your outgoing call.

I did about 5 min of research, read somewhere that the Tech editor of the NYT said it was legit.

Main trouble for me they don't have Japan mobile prefix's for obvious reasons.
Only used it twice.

Would Scott C or kanebear care to check these guys out?

Thanks,

Scho

Not sure what there is to check out - you call, enter your number and either get a connection or do not.

This has been floating around for awhile now. I've used it for multiple calls to Germany with good success. You can't always hit a cell phone user since some of those are not accessible, but I've been able to hit land lines without problems and the quality is fine.

What do you mean by legit? They let you make international phone calls for free and they do. There are no guarantees beyond that.

On 23 November, David Pogue at the NY Times included this in one of his columns on various free or near to free things for your mobile phone.

I wish they included South Africa in their list of countries.

That's already been tried ... used to be in play in the later 1990s.

In any event, per the above post, the ad-idea seems more complicated than even the interesting regulatory-enabled "payment for traffic" arbitrage.

Strikes me as a bit like some other schemes, in a different industry, that got the regulators attention yet resulted in essentially nothing other than the SROS/markets adjusting the rules to shut down gaming of the market any further.
