Blank screen when booting up (after Windows logo)

I have a Dell desktop at home and have been getting this problem for the last couple of months.

I turn on the computer, see the Windows Logo page with the bar below it showing that it is processing.

Then when it comes to the next page, the screen goes blank! There is nothing wrong with the monitor, I've tested it. Windows continues to run because I see my Skype phone and webcam booting up.

I have to turn my computer on and off a few times before it works again. But then it only works once before it happens again.

Anyone experienced this before?

Did you install any new software or hardware before this started?

Just for kicks, try disconnecting all your USB devices before booting up next time.

My recommendation as well. Older versions of Windows XP will lock up with a USB hard drive attached upon boot-up.

Thanks, I will try all the recommendations! I do have a USB hard disk but I haven't noticed whether it has been attached when I had the problems.
