AFAIK, you cannot make any changes to your account without being migrated to cingular....

YMMV

I also have the unlimited Canada plan. I pay a flat $20 and get Canada with no additional charge; it just goes against my minutes total.

Does anyone know if I can upgrade to a BlackBerry with similar features with an AT&T contract, or do I have to move to the dark side?

Back when I was with AT&T I obtained a plan with 1700 minutes per month, unlimited roaming in Canada AND Mexico for $99.00 per month. I migrated the plan over to Cingular, but when I told friends about it, they were told that the plan is no longer available. The plan does require at least 50% of the minutes each month to originate in the US, which is no problem for me, but it still is a great deal. It is a North America plan, so calls from MX to CA are also included as well as vice versa.

Now once I get to Central America, they get their pound of flesh back, but I have other means of dealing with that problem.

NEXTEL plans used to include free roaming in Canada on the TELUS network. I am not sure if this has changed since the Sprint merger.

Just to add to an older thread here... I'm on the Verizon North America's Choice 900 plan (900 anytime, 1000 wkend/night minute) for $89.99 - a same plan can be had for $59.99 (450 anytime minutes instead). I travel between YYC-SAN, LAX-YVR often so it's AWESOME. No roaming charges, no LD charges. Total freedom ... US->CAN, CAN->CAN, CAN->US, and of course, US->US. I heard Mexico is also included but never had to exercise that option. This is by far the best plan as it piggybacks off of Telus Mobility ... (not surprising since Verizon owns something like 40% of Telus) - With Telus being the best coverage by far in Canada, and likewise with Verizon in the US, IMO there is no other choice for me.

This may be OT, but IME if you hang out close enough to the border, you can get your US cell tower (what I did on my canadian adventure)...
