"Recharge" In Flight Without AC Outlets

Now this is a very interesting device. InflightPower.com has announced its InFlight Powe USB Unit which allows you to charge small electronic devices via a standard headphone jack found in most airline seats. That means that you never have to worry about running out of juice when flying cross country or overseas with your iPod, PDA, cell phone or DVD player -- if the device can recharge via USB.
Rest of the story here.

Product website here.
It mentions that it is for sale in the SkyMall magazine but I have not seen it so it must have come out recently(?).

Really cool device

I wasn't sure where to stick this, but I just found this:

Now this is a very interesting device. InflightPower.com has announced its InFlight Powe USB Unit which allows you to charge small electronic devices via a standard headphone jack found in most airline seats. That means that you never have to worry about running out of juice when flying cross country or overseas with your iPod, PDA, cell phone or DVD player -- if the device can recharge via USB.

The 12 ounce device works by storing energy from the headphone jack and relaying that energy to the USB connector. The device uses a trickle charger which takes 3-5 minutes to fully charge. Once charged, it holds enough energy to power a connected device for about one minute and then the cycle starts over again. Over 700 devices are supported with different tips that attach to the USB port. From InflightPowers website:

The Inflight Power cable uses an internal trickle charger that takes 3-5 min to fully charge, then outputs power to the attached device (phone, music player etc). It does this repeatedly, thus the cable charges the attached device every 3-5 minutes for 1 minute or less.

The audio volume must be cranked to the maximum to provide the best results. The InFlight Power USB Unit is available for $34.99 by itself, or $49.99 + $4.99 for each additional tip if you need a special connector for your electronic device.

This can be a very useful thing to recharge my phone on the flight

So all I have to do is plug into the audio port on a NW plane? Oh, hang on a minute...

With all due respect, it sounds kind of spammy.

I did check, and the OP's other two posts were genuine NW ones.

I wasn't spamming, saw the story at digg.com and thought it was cool gadget. Don't know how well it works, but will get one for my next trip.

So over the course of an hour my device will charge for about 12 minutes?

That's totally useless, at least to me. For that amount of money, I could buy a lot of batteries and a connector for $5 to power the device for hours and hours.

Kind of a cool thing to come up with, just can't picture it having much value.

I doubt if a headphone connetion puts out more than a milli-watt or two with a few volts at best. I will file this miracle invention next to the exciting cold fusion discoveries.

Looks more like a gee-whiz invention than anything practical.

It made the front page of Yahoo today. Seems like an interesting concept but it's yet another brick to haul around in one's ever-multiplying stash of charging devices..
