Help with XP start up

Hi All,

I have pretty standard PC running Windows Xp with service pack 2. Somehow i have managed to install a bunch of programmes that start every time i boot the PC. I just need to find a way to stop them starting.

I'm sure there must be simple way but I can't figure it out and I was hoping that some of the tech gurus here could help.

cheers

Short of completely uninstalling them using the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel, from the Start Menu, select Run and types msconfig in the window. Select the Startup tab and uncheck the ones you don't want to run at startup. Do be careful not to accidentally uncheck something the system needs.

Thanks,

That seems to have done the trick.

You might also want to install spybot. Included is a tool which allows you to see and control what starts up - whether it's in the startup folder or the registry. good at stopping spyware/adware, too. Make sure you enable "teatimer." It'll monitor system changes as they occur.

Note: it's free.

msconfig is very important, and it's easy to forget about its existence.
To counter that, I have a shortcut to msconfig on my desktop.
The command line is
C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe

Thanks for all the help.

I have made some progress, but there is something which is hogging the pc's resources and for the life of me i can't figure out what it is.

for the msconfig trick, just go to run>msconfig
BE CAREFUL! Some this (like antivirus) you want to keep running on startup. If in doubt about wheter something is ok to stop, google the process and it will tell you what it is.

Try bringing up the task manager and see what's consuming CPU and/or I/O.

A couple more specifics about this. Right-click on the taskbar, and choose Task Manager. You will want the processes tab, and you can see what is taking up your CPU and Memory.

Check the services, Start/control panels/administrative tools/services, many services are not needed. Make sure Index service is set to Disabled.

If you have any Norton software, it is a huge resource hog.
