satellite phone? staying at a zero-signal area in New York for 2 months in the summer
My friends and her family(12 people in total) are staying in a little town in upstate New York for two month in the summer. The place they're going to has population of nearly 10000, yet they have no cellular coverage from any national and rural coverage.
Is it possible to rent a satellite phone for a couple of months? Any recommendation appreciated!
Thanks!

There are locations in the Adirondacks with no cellular service whatsoever. That is by design, so I've heard. Some parts of the NY Thruway (I-87) north of Lake George have no coverage.
But a town of 10k people sounds like it should have something. Call the local COC or some real estate agents (what RE agent gets by without a cell phone?) and ask them what they use.

They decided not to bother... since they could still use regular landline phones inside the house.(and Skype as well)

It sounds like its the house, (the location of the house relative to cell towers), not the town. I'd bet that a town of 10,000 people in the Adirondacks has cell coverage.

satellite rentals
Have gotten quite a bit cheaper in the past years.
about 35$ a week, or 135$ a month with 30 minutes free and
then, pricing about .90$ a minute. Or less, with higher prepays.
globalstar works fine.
You can also BUY a phone and get a prepay card, if you want to own something for 300$ for a slightly used phone.
